Getting Started in Open Source
Open-Source software has a huge impact in the industry and I, like many developers, view open-source contributions like a small badge of honor. As a young engineer, it can be a challenging and intimidating barrier to begin making meaningful open-source contributions. My own journey is off to a modest start. For a long time, I was only a lurker and only recently have I been able to begin contributing to the projects I’ve been using. A few months ago, I began to have enough familiarity in the Airflow project to warrant some interaction. I began by joining their Slack org and asking a few questions, as well as making some comments on existing Github issues. More recently, I did a similar thing with the Seldon project and after helping me solve an issue, their contributors asked if I’d help create a PR for their project. It was a simple change to their docs adding a hint about how to install behind a proxy. And just like that, my open-source contributing career seems to have officially left the starting gates.
